Quiksilver East Coast Boardrider Challenge
Quiksilver brought the new Boardrider’s Club format for its inaugural East Coast kick off with the “GENERATIONS OF BOARDRIDERS, East Coast”. Four generations of surfers, all from five different regions in the Sunshine State. Matt Kechele directed the event on request from Quiksilver’s, Mike Reilly (VP of Sales) and Chad Wells (US Marketing).
The East’s version kicked off as a shorter, 60 minute formatted tag team race with chosen team captains that were leaders in five respected surf regions. From there, the Team Captains handpicked a chosen squad that were likely to show up, and blow up! With the remaining energy of Winter Storm Riley, the four teams came out of the starter gate looking supercharged for the 2K prize purse! Leading was Brevard with strong man upstart, Corey Howell, and Jupiter Squad Leader, Giorgio Gomez. Team Brevard kept creeping ahead on score totals as Chauncey Robinson gave a solid bump ahead with his double whammy claim to combo on the sand! Chase Modelski of Jupiter answered right back with a similar combo. It was full seesaw back and forth, and then Deerfield Beach Boardrider, Tanner Strohmenger, flared up with an 8.2 Double whammy that put the South Florida Crew right in the mix again. Hot Grom, Sterling Mackish, backed up Tanner’s solid wave. Team St. Augustine/North FL Captain, and former WSL Stalwart, Gabe Kling, had a solid score coming in to get them in contention had just run out of water on a solid backside vert in the shorebreak. David Speir solidified a solid comeback over Jupiter’s squad, just finishing seconds before the end of the 60 Minute Heat! Photos courtesy of www.easternsurf.com
